Cloud computing uses off-site server clusters that are in “the cloud” or in large, secure, well-maintained network operation centers.

Translation: you don’t have to worry about cloud services like you do the server in your closet.

Additional slightly geeky note: Cloud “clusters” scale and can be reconfigured raidly to meet your projects, and business needs.

The World/Cloud in Your Hands: iPhone

Update: Time moves along quickly and as I look at this old screen shot of my iPhone its obvious how much has changed. I went from NetNewsWire (beloved by many, but not by me) to News Rack which became too slow, to current Reeder client which seems fast and sane. When on the iPad I like browsing in Flipboard for a more leisurely browse around my subscribed news feeds.

iPhone and iPad as a cloud device is what a lot of us are discovering works very well. I’m sure there is a parallel in the Android and WebOS world.

After years of Palm and Windows Mobile smart phones the last 14 months have been blissful with an iPhone.

There is very little that it can’t learn to do. Photos, video, Exchange Email, Google mail, Google Applications, remote desktop, VNC, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Bryant Park Project (oops not that last one.), Evernote, SimpleMind (mind mapping), GPS, readable, usable Web browsing, banking, and the list goes on and on and on. This evening I found the WordPress iPhone app.

It isn’t just that these applications are available and work well on the iPhone but that they are useful. If I want to go beyond useful there is the entire world of YouTube, the built-in Ipod, Pandora, Internet radio tuners, Sirius Satellite radio…

Oh and I forgot, Quickbooks, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and a gazillion blogs.

I try to help my clients understand why they don’t want a Blackberry or a Pre, or even an Android – all of which are nice phones, but it takes having an iPhone in your hand and find out how useful and well it works.
